Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant DEMÍNKA

The first time you enter the Demínka Restaurant, you’ll immediately see that tradition is not just an empty phrase. Maintaining the Demínka tradition heads our list of priorities and we are proud to carry on the legacy of many preceding generations of restaurateurs and café owners.

Established in 1886, Demínka is one of the longest running establishments in Prague. The restaurant’s unique light and airy interior has been retained to this day. The high ceilings are decorated with Art Nouveau stucco elements that are protected landmarks. It is obvious at first glance that today’s lounge area formerly served as a games room and the original decor provides evidence that it was a gathering place for chess, billiards and card players.

If Demínka’s walls could talk, we’d surely hear many an interesting tale. For example, it was at Demínka that the founding documents for Sparta Praha were signed in the nineteenth century. Then, during the early 1900s, the establishment became a meeting place for anarchists and it is quite possible that the Šibeničky (Gallows) satirical magazine was born at the table where you are sitting. It is also impossible to forget the many celebrities that patronised Demínka on a regular basis.

Reading through the list of our famous guests is like paging through an encyclopaedia of well-known personalities from the Czech art scene. You’ll find names such as Jaroslav Hašek, Fráňa Šrámek, Stanislav Kostka Neumann, Jiří Mahen, František Gellner, and Rudolf Těsnohlídek. After World War I, the establishment’s regular patrons included Karel and Josef Čapek, František Langer, and the actors from the nearby Vinohrady Theatre. During the dismal Communist era, Demínka was a refuge for many banned artists, such as the well-known Charter 77 members Vlasta Chramostová and Stanislav Milota. Even today, you may run into someone famous when you visit Demínka.

The quality of the food and beer we serve at Demínka is of the utmost importance to us. We are proud of the fact that we are one of the select group of Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurants – the best establishments offering original Pilsner beer and serving first-class Czech cuisine. We are convinced that you will be delighted no matter what you choose from our menu. We know that the only way that we can guarantee the highest possible quality of food and drinks is by using superior ingredients and working with them with integrity. As a result, at Demínka we have combined tradition and history with the most modern tap systems for drawing beer and contemporary culinary art concepts. Our bartenders attend professional training on an ongoing basis and participate in various beer drawing competitions, such as Master Bartender, Pinkasova noční můra (Pinkas Nightmare Competition) to name but two.

During the past few years we have started organising various gastronomic events in order to broaden the range of culinary experiences we offer. These include Bavarian Week, our annual St. Martin’s Feast, and our Game Banquet. During these events you have an opportunity to taste foods that are otherwise not available and to enjoy a special selection of beer and wine. If you would like to hold a private party or a company celebration at Demínka, there is absolutely nothing standing in your way. The restaurant has a capacity of 130 and the lounge can accommodate up to 50 guests. Of course we provide refreshments according to your specific wishes. We also offer catering services and are able to organise receptions, banquets, cocktail parties, and garden fetes for up to 2,000 guests.

Why don’t you visit Demínka yourself and become a part of its famous history? We’re looking forward to seeing you!
